Bordeaux is the New Black

A/W 2011 fashion is all about our favourite shades of wine. From deep Burgundies to soft rose’s, this fall’s most coveted pieces are showing up in a variety of colour. Let us introduce the ‘burgundy’ piece. Rich complexions of violet, cranberry, crimson and ruby dominate the scene. The style-forward are wearing wide-leg trousers in a deep grape tweed, delicate mulberry scarves and soft sheer blouses in an array of cherry and plum. No matter what your skin tone, hues of burgundy will enhance your complexion. Adding glamour to your look, a caste of mauve will compliment your Fall fashion.

New on the Michelin Scene

More great news for the West London restaurant scene this week as that little red almanac of culinary expertise, The Michelin Guide, has felt it fitting to award 3 of its coveted Michelin Stars to eateries within our neck of the woods – Knightsbridge’s exceptional Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the wonderful Pollen Street Social and the newly-opened Hakkasan Mayfair. Only going to show that Society West is even more discerning about its recommendations than the Michelin men themselves, only the first two of these have gained the SW-stamp of approval. We’re happy to enclose our reviews for you this week, also with a polite but courteous nod to Hakkasan Mayfair’s sister restaurant (that had already beaten it to its first star and we think offers better value) Yauatcha.Follow these links for the full SW reviews and be sure to stop by to sample some of West London’s cooking at its finest.

Five Must-Have Transitional Autumn Pieces

1. Coloured Pants

Don’t pack away the colours just yet! The spring trend of bright blue and intense orange is extending into the autumn. Of course, we are still loving coloured jeans and cigarette pants but this autumn, why not invest in a chic pair of wide-legged trousers? They offer an excellent alternative to the Spring/Summer staple. Pair with a blazer and pumps and you have a great look for the cooler months!

J Brand | Skinny pop jean | £205 @ Anna

 2. Military Jackets

This season, army green is emerging as a must-have wardrobe addition. No longer an accent colour, the shade made famous in year’s past is an autumn essential. With high collars and detailed pockets, we find the military jacket particularly attractive (flip the collar for a more dramatic look). Pair your military wear with skinny jeans, coloured denim or over summer dresses for more of a autumnal image.

3. Silk Blouse
The versatile silk blouse is a key item when transitioning into last the third of the year. Purchase a fitted blouse for a classic, crisp look or opt for a top in a looser style. The extra silk fabric can casually flow around your waist or be knotted to the side for the truly brave! Tuck in a printed blouse with a high-waisted trouser and belt. For the office, wear a sheer blouse with this season’s midi skirt; an easy way to be both professional and chic.

4. Midi Skirt
The midi-skirt is another trend that is staying from Spring! Whether it is an A-line or pencil style, below the knee skirts are a hit for fall. Pair with a tucked-in blouse (and large belt), or a loose fitting sweater and some chunky jewellery. This look is appropriate for work and can transition into a night on the town – perfect for the SW woman on-the-go.

5. Wedge heels
This year, wedge heels aren’t just for summer nights and beach parties. We are seeing wedges everywhere for the upcoming Autumn season. They look great with a midi skirt or dress pants to complete a daytime look. For the evening, pair with skinny jeans and a sheer top. When it comes to this Autumn’s wedges, the higher and more colorful the better!

Rugby World Cup Openings

As much as we love the idea of the Olympics being on home soil this time next year, giving us all an overload of sport-fueled hysteria and associated parties, there’s something nice (and comical) about the nation coming together in early-rising to support the national team when they’re playing out in the far-east or down under. Cue the bleary-eyed hoards of loyal Brits hunting for a comfortable spot to watch the game with friends at 7:30am and trying to work out whether it really is acceptable to have a beer before breakfast. Well have no fear, Society West affirms that YES, it IS ok to have a beer before breakfast (in the name of supporting your team and only if it is a GOOD beer) and we’ve been in contact with some of our SW-recommended DRINK spots to see who would be opening early to help out in that department.

Where to Watch

Simply put, the Cadogan Arms is a great traditional pub with good food and excellent service. For the RWC, they’re offering private party packages that can cater from 5 to 150 guests and includes a cooked English breakfast, plenty of coffee and juices and enough plasma screens to ensure you miss none of the action. They promise to have good Bloody Mary’s and Buck’s Fizz/Mimosa’s available to help struggle through the early start.

The Prince Bonaparte

This Bayswater SW-favourite gastro-treat is making all our dreams come true by agreeing to open early for the weekend games (we often have dreams about drinking beer and eating breakfast together you see…while watching rugby…at 7am.) Call ahead for a table to make sure you have a prime viewing spot and come along with friends for a fun way to start the day.

The Duke of Clarence

This neighborhood favourite is a great place to watch the big match with multiple large plasma screens around the bar and plenty of space to crowd around. Great service and a fun crowd make it many-a-locals go-to good time venue at any time of the day, but for the RWC, they’re opening half an hour before kick-off on selected match days to welcome you with breakfast and Bloody Mary’s. Booking recommended.
